The Garden Route

Plettenberg BayThe east coast of Africa from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is sandwiched between wild ocean shores and the rugged mountains that capture the moisture-laden air that blows inland off the ocean, and create the great desert of the interior. This strip comprises the famous ‘Garden Route’, an 800 kilometre ramble through beautiful and varied scenery, with the opportunity for many excursions from the main artery to vineyards, mountain passes, historic villages, fishing communities, guest houses, restaurants, forests and  places of historical and natural interest.

A meander through some of South Africa’s most beautiful scenery, the Garden Route is best enjoyed by private car, hired or chauffeured, staying at some of the many very good quality homes, B&Bs and guest houses along the way. Plettenberg Bay with its spectacular Robbeberg, Knysna, Hemanus, Arniston (Waenhuiskrans) and Cape Aghulas, southernmost tip of Africa, are just some of the iconic towns en route. In addition, several malaria-free game reserves are accessible inland from the route, and a short hop over the mountains reveals the Karoo, the desertified interior of South Africa famous for an entirely different sort of beauty.
